A Guide to Choosing the Right Temperature for Your AC

Oct 19, 2021 | Uncategorized

Choosing the right temperature for your air conditioner’s thermostat involves more than just your comfort level. Using an air conditioner lowers the moisture in your home and can help prevent mold growth. However, because energy costs are so high, you will probably consider that in your decision-making process about what temperature will work for your household. A higher temperature will save you money on both your energy bills and delay having to replace your air conditioner because it won’t have to work as hard.

A good place to start is with the Energy Star recommendation of 78 degrees in the summer. If you use a ceiling fan, you can set the thermostat five degrees higher because of the air generated by the fan. Setting your thermostat here and leaving it for a few days will give you an idea of whether or not you can live with your home at that temperature.

If it feels too uncomfortable, you can adjust the thermostat up or down. Adjust it by one degree and try the new setting for a few days. Remember that adjusting the temperature up will save you money on your monthly bill.

Keep adjusting the temperature up or down until you find the hottest temperature that is still comfortable for you. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can turn the AC off during the day when no one is at home. Otherwise, you want to leave it alone. Turning your air conditioner on full blast is also problematic. It will cost you money and can cool your home too much.
